First Steps - Lobbying Senator Kerry and the Super Committee

CSfC's Economic Fairness Team has been meeting and planning for the past few months and at our September 21st community meeting we unveiled our three initiatives:
  • Join the efforts of the Defend the American Dream campaign
  • Unelect Senator Scott Brown
  • Lobby Senator Kerry in his role on the Congressional Super Committee
The Super Committee initiative has the shortest time-frame, and one of the Super Committee members represents Massachusetts, so we have a short-term organizing opportunity and we're starting out by focusing our efforts there.

From the National Journal:

Oct. 14: House and Senate committees must submit recommendations to the committee by this date.
Nov. 23: Deadline for the committee to vote on a plan with $1.5 trillion in deficit reduction.
Dec. 2: Deadline for the committee to submit report and legislative language to the president and Congress.
Dec. 23: Deadline for both houses to vote on the committee bill.
Jan. 15, 2012: Date that the “trigger” leading to $1.2 trillion of future spending cuts goes into effect, if the committee’s legislation has not been enacted.

Our first action is to collect post-cards from around Cambridge and Somerville with messages from voters for Senator Kerry.

We're asking people to urge Kerry not to make a deal that decreases the deficit at the expense of the poor and middle-classt.  We want him to protect essential programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, and consider cutting Defense spending and closing tax loopholes for corporations and the wealthy.

You can review and print out the post-card yourself.

Note: The Post Card is a Google Doc which should print on two sides of a page.  It may look like a four-page document in some browsers, but when printed or saved to PDF, it will come out as two pages.

It's designed for double-sided printing on an 8.5" x 11" letter-sized sheet of paper.  If you can print it on heavier, card-stock paper, that's ideal.

We're distributing the cards on October 1st and 2nd at the Honk! Fest in Davis Square and Oktoberfest in Harvard Square.  We'll also be handing out cards at the Progressive Mass kick-off meeting on Sunday, Oct. 2nd.
